From 6 April 2026, anyone who wishes to privately keep a primate in England must hold a licence.
If you have a pet primate, under The Animal Welfare (Primate Licences) (England) Regulations 2024 , a new licensing scheme is being introduced to ensure primates are kept only by those who can meet these strict welfare requirements.
For a licence to be approved:
- an inspection will need to be carried out
- the licence conditions must be met
